Are You That Girl On Soul Train?!

Damita Jo Freeman’s resume is over three pages long. I remember watching the 1984 Summer Olympics closing ceremony when I was 13 and mesmerized by all the street dancers performing on stage. It was a time when Breaking, Popping, and Locking rose to the mainstream through cult movies like Flashdance, Beat Street, Breakin’, and many more. Lionel Ritchie’s single reached number one on three Billboard charts (pop, R&B, and adult contemporary). In the UK, it peaked at number two on the singles chart.
Somehow, and without knowing, Damita Jo had seeped through all the cracks of my childhood, from Soul Train to naming dance steps, choreographing music videos, the 1984 Olympics, teaching dancers, and so much more. Damita has been instrumental in developing many facets of the dance we know today.
